Data collection on enterprises by Statistics Finland
Statistics Finland collects data with enterprise inquiries when the necessary data for the creation of statistics cannot be derived from the existing registers of general government. Data collections from enterprises often use a sample, where the selected enterprises represent other enterprises in their respective industry of a similar size.
If your enterprise has been selected as a respondent for a data collection, Statistics Finland will always contact you in advance by post or email. This communication will explain what data will be collected and for what purpose the data will be used. You will also be given instructions on how to participate in the data collection.
Business enterprises have an obligation to provide data on matters defined in the Statistics Act. If the data collection is statutory, this is explained in the accompanying letter. Statistics Finland has consulted the parties that represent enterprises on the data collections from enterprises and any changes to them.
Statistics Finland treats all collected data as confidential. The data are published as statistics and studies in which the answers of individual enterprises cannot be identified.
In order to ensure the reliability of statistics, it is important that as many enterprises selected for a sample as possible respond to data collection. By participating, you will help Statistics Finland in creating high-quality statistics that support decision-making, research and social debate. All Statistics Finland data collections from enterprises can be responded to online.

Intrastat declarations to the Customs
In the European Union (EU), statistics on (intra-Community) sales between the member countries are collected into the Intrastat system. As a main rule, VAT-liable companies and communities engaged in intra-Community trade must file statistics notifications on their imports and exports to the customs districts of Finnish Customs.
through the TYVI service on an electronic Intrastat form
as a CSV or ASCII file
as an Edifact statistics message or
by email as an ASCII file.
The statistical review period is a calendar month. Each period, notifications must cover deliveries imported or exported during the concerned calendar month and the related sales invoices of which were dated for the same month. The statistical data must be filed by the 10th working day of the following month at the latest.
Trade-specific licences and notifications
Certain trades require notification to the authorities or registration as a practitioner of the profession in question. Some trades require a separate licence, without which the company cannot operate.
